Former Australian Test Cricketer Michael Kasprowicz and Triple Olympic Gold Medallist Stephanie Rice go head to head in a curry cook-off!
Darlinghurst, September 26: Former Australian test cricketer and fast bowler, Michael Kasprowicz is trading his cricket whites for chef whites to go head to head against three-time Olympic gold medallist, Stephanie Rice, in a curry cook-off on 6 October 2016.
Announcing the cook-off Opportunity International Australia Chief Executive Officer, Robert Dunn, said: “We are delighted that Stephanie Rice and Michael Kasprowicz will kick off our Great Australian Curry fundraising campaign with this curry cook-off.
Mr Dunn who was recently in India for Opportunity said that “Seeing firsthand the impact of small loans, empowering parents to meet the needs of their children, was so rewarding.
“Kids can dream of becoming whatever they want in the future, whether it be sportspeople or teachers, because they know their parents can afford to give them an education. It’s the way it should be.”
This event organised by Opportunity will enable Australians to invest in a mother living in poverty so that she can use a small loan to buy an item like a sewing machine and start a small business.
A gift as small as $70 can be life changing experience for a family in a developing country who can’t afford the basics – like food on the table, schooling for the children.
Stephanie Rice invited Australians to get behind the Great Australian Curry. “By simply getting together with some friends, and family and cooking up your favourite curry, we can help raise much needed funds and give people in Asia a hand-up,” she exclaimed.
“It will be inspiring to see the competitive spirits which drove them to international sporting success come through in the kitchen rather than in the pool or on the cricket pitch.
“Every dollar raised through this event and the Great Australian Curry campaign will provide small loans to families in India, Indonesia and the Philippines so they can start a business, earn regular incomes and begin to leave poverty behind, Mr Dunn said.
According to Opportunity, 98% of Opportunity’s loans are repaid, which means that every small gift helps transform a family’s future for generations – as small businesses become successful.
“For a family who can’t afford the basics, a gift as small as $70 can be life changing. By helping a mother start a food shop or open a samosa stand small loans enable them to earn a regular income, invest in their children’s futures and strengthen their communities,” Mr Dunn added.
Michael Kasprowicz and Stephanie Rice can be seen cooking off at Nilgiri’s Indian Feast in Cremorne on October 6.
But if you cannot be there, Opportunity is inviting Aussies to cook up a favourite curry as part of ‘The Great Australian Curry’ campaign, share it with friends, and raise funds to enable people living in poverty to start a small business.
Three easy ways to get involved:
- Share a spice night at home
- Host a curry cook off at work or invite people to bring in a spicy share plate
- Let the professionals do their thing by heading out to enjoy a meal at an Asian or Indian restaurant.
