Kolkata: As many as 15 students from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur have been selected for the Google Summer of Code open-source coding programme, the institute said.

The Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is an international annual programme, in which Google awards stipends (of $5,500 as of 2015) to all students who successfully complete a requested free and open-source software coding project during summer.

During 2005-2012, IIT-Kharagpur had produced 51 GSoCers, the highest in India.

“This time, a record 15 students got selected from IIT-Kharagpur which includes one student from the first year, six students from the second year, two students from the third year, five students from the fourth year and one student from the fifth year,” said a statement from the institute.

Late last year, Google had announced that it would train two million new Android developers in the next three years.

Google’s chief executive Sundar Pichai, making the announcement in New Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), said that the plan would be partnership with 30 universities.

“For me, getting many developers in the workforce are going to solve many new things,” the Indian-origin CEO said.

He also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India.

Google has also proposed to partner with India’s state-owned telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.
