Cricket Victoria hosts Harmony Forum
Melbourne, July 31: Cricket Victoria and partner organisations today hosted key members of the community at a Harmony Forum today at the MCG.
Representatives from Victoria Police, education, business, the judiciary, leading sporting codes and other fields gathered to discuss issues faced by international students and promoted ideas for programs and activities that will increase social inclusion for students.
Facilitated by Ravi Bhatia, CEO, Primus & member of the Australia India Business Council, the event included contributions from a range of industries.
Mr Bhatia said the Forum had generated a groundswell of support.
“The Harmony Forum brought together some of the best minds in Victoria to forge a strategic framework for addressing issues faced by international students,” he said.
Cricket Victoria Chief Executive Tony Dodemaide said the Forum was designed to share ideas and initiatives.
“It’s about looking at ways to promote inclusion and harmony to the entire community. We believe that an international language like cricket is an ideal vehicle to help highlight these benefits and mutual understanding overall,” he said.
Speakers included The Hon Dr Sharman Stone Shadow Minister for Immigration; Russell James Essendon FC; Danielle Hartridge Victoria University; Commander Trevor Carter Victoria Police; The Hon Marsha Thompson Member for Footscray; Tam Sridhar Monash University; Dolores Singh Sports Without Borders and others.
Some of the key discussion areas included: • Fostering social inclusion through participation in sports and other extra-curricular events • Familiarisation with norms and customs in Australia • Assistance with obtaining work on fair and reasonable terms
