Uttaranchal Society of Australia Inc is organising for the first time Uttarakhand Sangeet Sandya (Cultural Night) on March 28, 2016 at The Heritage Reception Centre, 514-516 High Street, Epping, VIC 3075, where Uttarkhand’s most admired folks singers Sri Narendra Sigh Negi, Meena Rana, Pritam Bhartwan and Prakash Kahala along with their musicians will make the event a truly memorable. They will entertain the audience by singing melodious Garhwali and Kumoni songs. People from Uttarkhand are cordially invited to join the evening in large number to make it a success.

Narendra Singh Negi is one of the most prominent folk singers of the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. He started his music career by releasing “Garhwali Geetmala”. These Garhwali Geetmalas came in 10 different parts. As these Garhwali Geetmalas were from different companies he was finding it difficult to manage them. So he finally switched into releasing his cassettes by giving them separate titles. His first album came with the title called “Buraans”. Buraans is a well-known flower found on hills.

He has released most number of super-hit albums. He has also given his voice in many Garhwali movies like “Chakrachal”,”Gharjawai”,”Meri Ganga Holi Ta Maima Aali” etc. This renowned singer from Garhwal has sung more than 1000 songs.

Meena Rana

Meena Rana is another prolific Uttarakhandi singer. She can be heard on many Garhwali and Kumaoni music albums. She is considered to be one of the best female singer of Uttarakhand and even said to be the Lata Mangeshkar of Uttarakhand.

Mina Rana, like famous Anuradha Paudwal, is not formally or classically trained by anyone but has risen to the heights of being compared to the one and only the legendary Lata Mangeshkar who has been her idol from the very start. Incidentally, Meena’s first performance, at a very young age, which was in Hindi, was a Lata Mangeshkar song Nainon Men Badra Chhaye, she has never looked back. She got noticed as well as appreciated by people and the media.

Her first BIG break came at the age of 16 in 1991 when she sang for the movie “Nauni Pichadi Nauni”.

Meena has performed with almost all the renowned singers of Uttarakhand and has sung in many languages like Garhwali, Kumaoni, Jaunsari, Jaunpuri, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Kargali, Balti and in Hindi.

Pritam Bhartwan

Pritam Bhartwan is among the most popular young folk singer in Uttarakhand, today.

He was born at village Silla in Raipur block of Dehradun. Pritam released his first audio in 1994 and two years later he achieved big success with ‘Tausa Bao’. He now has more than 18 audio cassettes and 8 VCDs to his credit. Pritam proved his talent at a very young age when he obtained B (high) grade of the AIR in 1988. Belonging to a traditional tribe engaged in folk performances, Prtiam has obtained success despite all odds. Here are some excerpts from an exclusive interview with this talented folk singer of Uttarakhand.
